Do you ever feel stuck in a state of anxiety, emotionally shut down, or like you’re constantly on edge—even when things seem “fine”? These are signs your nervous system is working hard to protect you, often beneath conscious awareness.
Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, helps us understand how the nervous system responds to stress, trauma, and relationships—and how we can support it to restore a sense of safety and balance.
The Traffic Light of the Nervous System: Red, Yellow, Green
To make this more accessible, I often use a traffic light model to describe the three main nervous system states:
Red Zone – Freeze or Shutdown (Dorsal Vagal State)
The body’s emergency brake. You may feel:
- Numb, shut down, or disconnected
- Hopeless, heavy, or fatigued
- Isolated from others
- Mentally foggy or checked out
Yellow Zone – Fight or Flight (Sympathetic State)
The alarm system turns on. You might experience:
- Racing thoughts or hypervigilance
- Anxiety, restlessness, or panic
- Irritability or anger
- Tension, muscle tightness, or poor sleep
Green Zone – Regulated and Connected (Ventral Vagal State)
Where healing and connection happen. You’re more likely to feel:
- Calm, curious, and grounded
- Emotionally balanced and present
- Connected to others
- Clear-minded, focused, and resilient
In therapy, we aim to help you recognize these states in real time, expand your capacity to return to the green zone, and build tools to support regulation over time.
Why Nervous System Regulation Matters
When you’re constantly shifting between fight-or-flight and shutdown, it’s hard to feel emotionally stable, safe, or connected to yourself and others. Nervous system dysregulation is at the core of many mental health struggles—not because something is “wrong” with you, but because your system is trying to protect you.
By integrating Polyvagal-informed therapy and somatic techniques, we help your body:
- Build awareness of your internal states
- Develop tools for self-regulation
- Create a greater sense of safety, connection, and emotional resilience
Why Clients Like Nervous System-Based Therapy
Clients often describe this approach as empowering, validating, and deeply transformative—especially if they’ve tried traditional talk therapy but still feel stuck. They appreciate that it:
- Makes sense of their symptoms in a non-pathologizing way
- Connects body and mind, not just thoughts
- Works gently with trauma, without needing to retell or relive painful events
- Gives real-life tools for managing overwhelm, anxiety, and shutdown
- Improves relationships, emotional flexibility, and overall well-being
Issues This Approach Can Help With
Nervous system regulation through Polyvagal Theory can support healing in a wide range of areas, including:
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Depression and emotional numbness
- Trauma and PTSD
- Chronic stress and burnout
- Social anxiety and isolation
- Grief and loss
